Music is my first love. I own a mandolin, 2 electrics, 2 beat around acoustics (both nylon and steel string) a ukulele (admittedly, my grandfather made this for me when I was a little boy, and when I last checked a few months ago, it only had one string.) and my beautiful acoustic/electric that flew with to Korea back in 2010 as part of my baggage allowance. Kyu Seok and I look at music the same way. We’re both pretty obsessed with it.

So when I got the word that Kyu Seok and his band 게인주의 were playing a show in Hongdae, I knew exactly what part of their show I wanted to capture: their energy. I wanted the pictures to reflect the atmosphere that Kyu Seok creates on stage. He grabs your attention, and doesn’t give it back to you until 게인주의 have powered through their set list. If you ever get a chance to see them, do it.

About Seoul photographer Tim Van Der Merwe

Seoul photographer Tim Van Der Merwe services Seoul and her greater area, with a primary focus on portraiture, couple and pre-wedding photography. His photographic style is inherently influenced by photo-journalism, with a love of genuine emotion and untouched, moments of humanity and expression. The aesthetics of his photographs are informed from years as a musician, a love of the ocean, an appreciation for a wabi-sabi outlook on life, and a love of strong colouring.
